She looks for wool and flax, and works with her hands in delight. Proverbs 31:13
There are some loves to which you always come back. For me, that love is crochet. There is a comfort in the rhythm of making each stitch that is unparalleled. It soothes me when I am troubled and always brings me peace and joy. Truly, my “hands work in delight.”
I have been crocheting since the age of 5. In fact, I remember the day that I fell in love with the art of crochet as if it were yesterday. One afternoon, my maternal grandmother sat me down and showed me, almost like magic, how to create something with a hook and yarn. My first projects were simple doll clothes and blankets. For years, I made everything using only two stitches – the chain and the hdc. However, in college, I taught myself how to read patterns and it was if a whole new world opened up. From that moment on, I have been challenging myself to new artistic heights with my crochet – from funky fun pieces to elegant heirloom items.
Not only is crochet a form of expression for me, it serves as a conduit of love between me and my friends and family. My paternal grandmother was an extraordinary baker. She would say that her “rolls were filled with love and that’s why they taste so good.” Well, that is how I feel about my crochet – each article is made with love in every stitch.
